Last week I got a call from a customer asking about framing and arranging old family photos. This is a great topic and one that I get asked often. Here are a few things to keep in mind when creating a display.

  • Variety the spice of a really interesting display, different shapes, sizes, and a mix of vertical and horizontal.
  • Mat colors should be within the tones of your photos, let them be individual to each photo so that each one looks its best individually. The width of the mat should be balanced with the molding , some wide, some narrow
  • Frames should be selected individually too, consider using a variety of widths of moulding.
  • Oval frames, and oval mats in rectangular frames are a great addition to your arrangement.
  • Consider putting some photos together in the same frame, creating a dramatic horizontal or vertical shape.
  • Add a shadowboxed keepsake or a document
  • Put all your frames pieces on the floor in front of your wall and move them around like puzzle pieces to find your most pleasing configuration.
  • Start hanging from the center of the wall out to the sides, leaving a ragged edge will allow you to build on to your arrangement
  • A family wall is something everyone enjoys, pull out those photos in the drawer and display them where you share them, that's what it's all about.
